3. What do the Scriptures principally teach?
The Scriptures principally teach, what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty God requires of man.
God has given us the Scriptures so we can love God so that we serve him and know his commandments so we can follow them and walk in his ways (Deut 10:12-13). Love and obedience are inextricably linked (John 14:23-24).
It is only through the Scriptures that we can come to know Christ as the Son of God (John 20:31), have our sins forgiven (Acts 10:43) and so receive eternal life (1 John 5:13).
He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?

Hi Keziah. I have been reading your blog inconsistently for a while but I have enjoyed hearing your thoughts especially on the catechism. I have really wished my children were more well-versed in the shorter but our church only half-heartedly teaches the even further dumbed down "Children's cathechism." I need to take more responsibility for this teaching, I'm aware...
Thanks, and keep up the great blog. I will be around.
Hi, Keziah. I wanted to let you know that I've been blogging a lot recently, but due to a few computer gliches, I can only post things once a week at the most. Thanks for reading, I hope you'll come back!
Kim - thank you for delurking! Even the children's catechism is a good start for them, isn't it? I'm glad my thoughts have been helpful for you - feel free to argue or contribute your own!
Deb - good to see you have returned to blogging. Did you even find out why your ISP didn't like Blogger?
We do teach it to our toddler and she knows the first few questions very well.
I did find out by doing some searching that in my children's school (a Christian school) my 11 and 10 year old are learning the shorter catechism. That made me feel better! (They are pretty independent with their schoolwork so I wasn't aware! I need to pay attention!)
Kim - that's great that they are all learning the catechism! How does your toddler manage? I help out at the pre-school Sunday school where we try to encourage the children to learn short memory verses - any advice for us?
