O come, O come, Emmanuel!
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory over the grave.
O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.
O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
O come, O come, great Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai’s height,
In ancient times didst gave the Law,
In cloud and majesty and awe.
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory over the grave.
O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.
O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
O come, O come, great Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai’s height,
In ancient times didst gave the Law,
In cloud and majesty and awe.

We sang this song this morning in church. It reminded me of the hope the people had then for the coming of the Messiah... and the hope we now have in the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ as King.
Today was the first Sunday of Advent: Hope... how very appropriate!
I think this is my favourite carol, but coming from a psalm singing church, I don't get the opportunity to sing it there. I need to satisfy my hymn singing needs somewhere else over Christmas!
I love that song as well, very beautiful. It's been stuck in my head quite a bit lately. That and "O Holy Night" :)
